Not being a historian, I will give you a regular mildly educated person’s understanding on the topic. Most people know that Athens, Greece started the concept of Democracy in 510 BCE (Before Common Era); Rome, Italy started the concept of a Republic in 509 BCE. I found it fascinating that the Roman Empire’s Republic started just a year after Greece started their Democracy. I’m not saying Rome took a page out of Greece’s playbook, but I did find it interesting that both nations started that approach so close in timing.
The Democracy of Athens started just 10 years before the Greco-Persian wars began. Talk about the concepts dodging a bullet in its infancy. I know Rome was nipping at the heals with their Republic, but they turned to Emperors as history tells us. History also told us that Greece was conquered so the Democracy of Athens did come and go as Greece changed hands between conquering nations and their own eras of freedom.
Most people know the battle of Thermopylae or even the battle of Marathon. But did you know that Greeks and Persians had a conflict that started before those conflicts?
